Wesley College Alumni ’95 Sponsor Boarding Fees with N3.5 Million Scholarship for Indigent Students in Ibadan

The 1995 alumni set of Wesley College of Science (WESCOSA), Elekuro, Ibadan, Oyo State, has donated ₦3.5 million to cover boarding fees for 10 indigent students in the school, ensuring they continue their education without financial setbacks.

The cheque presentation, which took place on Thursday at the school premises in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, provided relief for five SS2 and five SS3 students whose families could not afford the annual boarding fees. Each student received sponsorship worth ₦350,000 for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Beneficiaries of the WESCOSA ’95 Scholarship

The SS2 beneficiaries include Alawusa Alimo, Olubudo Goodluck, Gbeminiyi Okikiola, Alabi Eniola, and Sarajudeen Olamide, while the SS3 recipients are Amoo Testimony, Onaolapo Micheal, Babalola Mercy, Oyefeso Olaoluwa, and Tijani Rodiat.

Alumni Giving Back to Their Alma Mater

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Olanike Mustapha, President of WESCOSA ’95, explained that the gesture marked the 30th anniversary of their graduation from the college.

She said:

“We wanted to celebrate our anniversary by giving back to the institution that shaped us. During our planning, we discovered that some students were at risk of dropping out due to unpaid fees, including a boy whose father is blind. That moved us deeply.

We resolved to pay for ten students at ₦350,000 each, totaling ₦3.5 million. This is our way of investing in the future of these children.”

Mustapha also urged other alumni groups to emulate the initiative, stressing that government alone cannot sustain quality education in Nigeria.

A Timely Intervention for Struggling Families

The Principal of Wesley College, Mr. Obanisola Openiyi, described the donation as a lifeline for many families.

“Some of the beneficiaries had been unable to resume classes due to unpaid boarding fees. This scholarship will restore hope and inspire them to work harder. While government efforts in improving education are commendable, partnerships like this make a lasting difference,” he said.

He further called on alumni networks and well-meaning Nigerians to support schools through scholarships, mentoring, and infrastructure renewal.

Life-Changing Impact on Families

For one of the beneficiaries, Gbeminiyi Okikiola, the support came just in time. His father, Mr. Gbeminiyi Odina, who is visually impaired, had struggled to keep him in school.

With emotion, Odina shared:

“Without this help, my son could not resume school. I had been borrowing money just to sustain him. When I lost my sight, I feared his education would end. This scholarship is the greatest blessing we’ve received. I’ve told him to also give back when he succeeds.”

Student beneficiaries also expressed gratitude. Onaolapo Micheal (SS3) promised to work hard and make the alumni proud:

“This support has lifted a heavy burden from our families. We are thankful and determined to succeed.”

Selection Process Focused on the Neediest

The chairman of the WESCOSA ’95 Scholarship Committee, Mr. Ize Ozoya, explained that the selection was carefully carried out to ensure fairness.

“We targeted the most vulnerable students. This programme is not just about money—it’s about restoring dignity and giving hope to families,” he noted.
